Challah bread recepies

This is obviously way off any technical discussion..

I'm planning to bake some  Challah bread this weekend.  In french, we simply call it "pains aux oeufs"  or "Egg bread" in english.

I found some recepies on the web and was wondering if anyone had some good recepies to share.

I was thinking of Ben or Yair, in particular.  😉

Here's the best recipe I know:

  1. Go to the nearest bakery (or, around here, every store).
  2. Buy some.
  3. Eat. With or without something. It's very good even plain, but also works exceptionally well if you want to make a grilled cheese sandwhich or French toast.
  4. Hmmmm...

Sorry, I'm not big on baking, but I'm assuming any of the common recipes you can find will produce a good result (assuming the ingredients are good), as it's a relatively simple bread. I would just suggest practicing before unleashing it on other people. 😉

LOL!  That goes without saying.

On the occasional weekend, my wife & I will bake bread.  Even do a little contest at who bakes the better bread.  Sometimes she wins, sometimes I win.

We usually buy it at a bakery, which no longer makes it 😞

We found it at another bakery which makes it but does not taste as good as the first one.  However it is more  (what's the word...) ... the texture... no... it has a better sdensity (can't spend more time trying to remember the actual word I was looking for).

My wife tells me that Challah Bread has Jewish origins.  I figured you guys might have some old recepie somewhere..  😉  We love that bread.

It's certainly Jewish, but I don't know if its origins are (i.e. it might be a based on a type of bread made by other people).

In any case, you should note that there are many kinds. The most common is probably the braided version (see below), but I personally prefer the simply squarish one which is much easier to slice and work with for sandwiches and things like that.

P.S. If you happen to pass by Jerusalem, the Angel bakery makes some pretty good stuff. 😉

Looks similar to the Zopf we had as kids in Switzerland.

Ray, I bought myself a big Kitchenaid stand mixer a few moths ago, so that could be something to try, too. 🙂

LOL!!  Yes, we got one of those also.  575Watts.

It's great.  That's also a reason for doing bread.  I just want to do different bread.

I'm like Yair, I like the braided bread, but prefer the non-braided to make chicken sandwiches.

If I'm successful, I will send you guys the recepie.  😉

Buying it in Jerusalem wouldn't be the best idea, it would be stale before I got home! Smiley Wink    Now I'm hungry!

I'd say send me some bread, but the same problem as above, although you live about as close as any other Champions, I think even closer than Ben and Mike Porter.

I might be driving past your way this summer.  If so, I will let you know and bring a loaf of bread..  😉

That's if it turns out well..  😄

Well if you come straight down from where you are you go within 15 miles of where I live. When you cross the bridge over the end of Oneida Lake, just north of Syracuse, if you look east you will see an island, I live (when I'm not hundreds of miles away in hotels) just past that island, on the south shore.

If you do bring bread, please not the ones baked this weekend, they would be even more stale that the ones I mentioned earlier! 😉
