Hi Sattu,

I've never used OE but so I can't help you there. Back in the day, when
I did use Windows, I used FreeAgent for all my news reading. You can
probably still get it from tucows.com

If you're running OE from work, port 119 is most likely blocked by a
firewall. If at home, perhaps YOUR firewall is blocking the port (rare).
My caveman way to check these kinds of things is to ping the server. If
that works I run a simple telnet session:

your shell prompt> ping newsgroups.ni.com

your shell prompt> telnet newsgroups.ni.com 119

onse: blah, blah, blah>

If you can ping and then telnet to the server successfully, then you've
got something screwy going on in OE. I suggest you forget about it and
switch to FreeAgent. If you prefer to keep dumping time into OE, Google
through an OE newsgroup for answers to posts similar yours.

Good luck!

It is also possible that the NI news server only allows connections from e.g. US IPs. Are you coming from a foreign address? It will be more efficient if you use a local server anyway.

According to your screenshot, you are also using a local news server (narad.cc.iitk.ac.in). If this is the official news server of your ISP, try the following:

(1) See if they carry the newsgroup "com.lang.labview", they might.
(2) If they don't carry it, call customer support and ask them to add it. Most likely they will grant your request since it is a relatively low-volume news group.

I have no problems connecting to the NI news server directly and live in
the Netherlands.

One possibility could be that some ISPs block outgoing nntp to force
users to use their local nntp server to save network bandwith.

Perhaps I'm just being silly but it could be a DNS problem. Try doing the
same thing but use the ip-address instead: 130.164.140.31

If it works, then throw that IP address in your news reader and try it.

BTW, this would only be a temporary fix. NI could change that address
anytime so it's best to use the server name. You'll want to contact
your ISP and tell them to update their DNS server or something...
