He (JL) was sort of styled after Hortatio Hornblower

It's interesting you should say that, because I have read "The making of Star Trek", where it was repeatedly stated that the series (the original) is visioned as "Hornblower in space", and Kirk is different from Picard. Then again, while it doesn't out right say that Bill Shatner was a good actor, it is the general theme of his description, so maybe we shouldn't attach too much importance to that. 眨眼表情

BTW, one thing that was made clear in that book is that the ST team was very funny. For example, and I think this re-defines the term "punch line", at one point in the book there is a memo sent by Gene Roddenberry to Bob Justman, who was the producer, telling him that they should come up with serious scientific names for their gadgets, because calling them "Feinbergs" (after the show's prop master, Irving Feinberg) causes people not to be serious about it. Remember all these names. I will now add Justman's response:

To: Gene Roddenberry                  Date: March 20, 1967
From: Bob Justman                       Subject: S.F. Terminology

Dear Mr. Roddenberry,
I am in receipt of your memo of 3-20-67, in which you suggest we use "straight scientific names for our gadgetry....". I think you are correct in your feeling that we should encourage others to take a more serious view of out items and objects. Therefore, I feel that we should no longer use the term "Feinberg" as a substitute name for gadget. You are right in insisting upon our attempting to create and maintain high believability in Star Trek.
Therefore, I, for one, intend to dispense with all the jokes and levity I have undertaken this past season. I feel that in this way I can set an example for the rest of our fellow workers.

                                                  Very truly yours,

                                                  Robert H. Feinberg
                                                  Associate producer

Those who haven't understood the joke immediately are probably still wondering what it is, while those who realized are probably rolling on the floor. If no one is rolling on the floor, then I guess you need to read the book for it to impact you, and the book in general will probably be pretty boring for most people because it talks about how to make a TV series in the 60s.

BTW, even though I have watched most Trek stuff out there and read "The making of ST" and "The trouble with tribbles" and "The world of ST" and "The making of ST:DS9" and "The science of ST" and have seen the "Trekkies" movie, I am not a trekkie. Just someone who likes TV, movies and SF and has a moderately good memory for certain things.

Wow:

6 pages of posts on a topic titled 'How'.

I wonder what discussions with topic titles of who, what, when, where, and why would bring. Battlestar Galactica reminiscing, perchance

Dude...let's not go THAT far!!!

At some point, are we gonna have the Star Wars vs. LOTR debate on here????

Okay, I'll admit.  Right now I'm laughing.  I keep thinking of the Saturday Night Live episode where William Shatner tells the Trekkies "Get a life!  You...when's the last time you went on a date??" 极度高兴的表情

How could you possibly have a debate between the greatest piece of fiction in the 20th century and a 3rd rate science fiction wanna be?眨眼表情

What? Starwars Vs. LOTR debate????  No way.

I mean, you just can't compare them, one is an overblown over-hyped six-part series whereas the other is a skillfully crafted and thoroughly crafted ...erm.... six-part series. Hmm.

Either way, I'd pay to see Lucas slug it out with Jackson any day.

Seriously, the afore-mentioned debate is a no-brainer.  Just make sure no-one gets the real trekkies involved (although a three-way fight could be interesting too.  I suppose Frakes would have to stand in for the TRekkies).  Man, that could get heavy.

And by the way, I disagree with an earlier comment that the "boy" should have clobbered JLP.  It clearly should have been the other way around.  I do believe "Wes" was the least-loved (or most hated to be more accurate) character around.  Oh, I do remember the good old Star Trek drinking games 😄

Shane.
