I am the first to criticize the Bytes At Port.  But I was running a something similar in my head last nigh when I was thinking about this.  As you said, you have to do weird things when a good protocol is not used by the instrument.  Luckily in this situation there actually is a termination character so we don't need to dive through these hoops.

I've marked mcduff's solution because it does answer my original question about what to do when there is no termination character.

I've marked crossrulz solution because it looks like ">" will work as my termination character.
