New String Display Style - Show Symbols

Status: Declined

National Instruments will not be implementing this idea.

Same information as the '\' Codes Display but easier to read.

Tools like Word and Notepad++ allow you to view the hidden symbols in a string, it would be great if LabVIEW did as well.

I like your idea. But the in symbol style a <NEW LINE> must also show as a new line to make it more readable.

See also my idea here.

Would you want to show this on controls/indicators too?

AQ: I would vote for not on controls/indicators.

I would disagree.  If the idea is good for constants, then it is good for controls and indicators.  They should have the feature as well for consistency with the constant.

While this view is not likely to be needed for a general user interface, I can see how it has some value for controls and indicators when debugging.  I think KC's idea of having the \n for new line (and I imagine \r for carriage return as well) would show up as a new line aids in the readibility of this hybrid \code normal mode display.

KC: I agree. I tried to show that by having the next line in the symbol example. I should have had a second line to make it more obvious.

AQ: I'd like it available on FP items, just like the current display choices. It would be useful for debugging and some subVIs that end users don't usually see.

It would also be great if the default String probe and Conditional String Probe had the same capability.

I'd have it for constants, controls & indicators.  Nice..
