Kind of seems like a waste to have an R series card and then leave you with a really slow DAQ. It makes sense in a cRIO since it is meant for control applications. R series boards are more for testing. I would just buy a simple X series DAQ board and use DAQmx to get a lot more bang for your buck.

Of course I don't want to use Scan Interface to transfer acquisition samples. But I think User-Defined variables offered by Scan Interface are really convenient for communication between FPGA and host.
For example, with User-Defined Variables you can directly communicate a parameter or a command from the host to a processing loop in a FPGA SubVI without using front panel controls in the FPGA Top-Level VI. It gives cleaner diagrams.
