Did the message editor get changed or did I accidently change my web-browser settings?

The edit screen looks different this AM. Is this just my machine?

If it is new, then does anyone know how to use the new features?

Thena agin, after my coffee starts to work, I may figure this out myself.Smiley Happy

If that worked I may have incuded a smiley face for the first time in my life!

The message editor did change!  It's now WYSIWYG  - whatyouseeiswhatyouget.

Experiment with each of the options and if you have quesitons, please ask!

This new editor should resolve the issues that we had with posting code.

For example, #include <filename.h> will actually display the text correctly.  The fix will only work for new messages posted, so migrated posts might still have parts of the messages hidden as the text is treated as HTML.  If you run into a message that appears to be missing pieces that you need, please report it and we can fix those on a case by case basis.

Thanks!

Thank you Molly. Looks like JLV and CC will have some more emoticons to play with.Smiley Wink
As always, when challenged, I can manage to find problems.
First up, the buttons all have graphics, which take time to load, so unless they load, you see an empty gray space (I'm saying this because it happened, even though I'm on a "broadband" connection, which can sometimes be quite narrow. At first I thought it was a bug, because the buttons were wide, so I thought they were supposed to have text which I wasn't seeing).
To attach images, you still need to have an address.
The attachment field is still far from the edit window.
On my system (XP), there seems to be some wierd glitch when you have 2 windows. I originally tried responding to this thread when I had another reply window open and I couldn't get the cursor to appear for the second window. Only after a few tries of opening and closing did it appear.

You are so efficient!

I will pass along your feedback about the images and the attachments, but I'm not sure when they will be able to redesign those pieces to accommodate these requests.

I wasn't able to reproduce the dual window issue.  Can anyone else?

Thanks!

That no cursor thing (which means you can't write, BTW) seems to be caused by something not being loaded. Earlier, when I pressed Stop in my browser (IE), it appeared. Then, when I tried it again, it didn't appear, so I reloaded the page and let it load all of the images (for some reason it doesn't load them from the cache) and then it worked.

Also, it seems there is some problem with editing, I just tried to edit that post and the text didn't appear (maybe that also happens only when the page fully loads)? Addition: I just checked and that is the case. The text only appears when the page fully loads.

I wanted to edit to say that this doesn't actually have anything to do with the 2 windows, that was just a distraction.

What does have to do with 2 windows is that when you open 2 reply windows at the same time, the second one pops to the front and steals focus while you're typing. Admittedly, most people probably don't have 2 windows open at the same time, but I do (connection speed, remember?).

It looks like Ben won't be needing that HTML course after all...

Works all nicely for me so far.

Some random points I noticed:

  • We can get the old editor by clicking "Edit as HTML", but I have not found a way to switch back.
  • Hitting "enter" inserts an extra empty line. Why? Workaround: use shift+enter. to go to a new line.
  • Inseriting an image requires an URL. It would be nice if we also could directly local local images that then would be uploaded.
  • Undo (control+z) does not revert after inserting a quote (=does not remove the just inserted quote).
  • Undo (control+z) is very coursly grained (e.g. a added a line, typed some text and misspelled the last character, undo took out the entire line again).
  • ...

Another improvement I noticed is macros are now insterted where the cursor is instead of at the end of the message.

Molly,

I like the new editing tool.Smiley Happy  I especially like the ability to view the discussion in a popup.  I find myself often opening two windows so that I can go between the discussion and my post.

Everything appears to be straight forward, and I've even found that local images can be attached by simply typing the local path instead of the URL address.

Now if you could just get that problem with the attachment being lost fixed!Smiley Wink
