Stars Addicted Anonymous

I think you guys didn't catch the spirit...
This thread has become like an AA meeting with bar open 😉

So doesn't begging for stars prove that I really need to be here? 😮

Thanks Alten... We needed that.. 😄

I noticed that a certain individual gives low ratings to those who reply to his questions. Strange...
I'll follow Ray's advice.. 😄

We should do a "secret poll".. "how do you react to a 1-star rating within a thread that is not completely answered?" ...

😉

If it wasn't for that first gold bar...

Addition to stars is similar to being addicted to food, you need a minimal amount but then how much is too much?

As long as the rules for the bars stay as they are, the contributors with the smaller rating counts should rightly avoid wondering into those rough threads. This is were one of the differences between the old Exchange and the new come into play. Becuase commnets could not be rated, we just had to sit back until someone posted an answer. Once the was an A posted, we could comment away free from any rating threat. The other plus in the old Exchange was that people could change a rating once they found out it was better than they first thought.

I am a sucker for a challenge. I have stepped into those discusion were the low rating a flying and still carry the scars. In the long run I think this hits are worth it because I often learn something from these threads.

So...

If he's looking a little lean, throw him a bone.

As suggested before, the current five-level rating system implies a resolution (over 2 bits!) that cannot be justified in real life for lack of calibration. The only crude hint at any calibrations is the tag "5(best)", but we cannot tell if one star is just a little shy "thank you" or a punitive "this answer really sucked!". The intent necessarily varies between raters and the interpretation varies between rateees. 😉

The only thing we really need is a boolean rating system: A single check-box labeled "excellent answer", a post is either highly rated or not rated. We still have a greyscale in the fact that truly excellent posts will receive more than a few ratings. (I personally use the current system like that, I give either 5 stars or don't rate the answer).

The current star system is also counterproductive to the quality of the forum. IF e.g. the first answer is already pretty good, but for some reason only shows one star, most will think twice to add to that thread, OTOH if each answer in a thread has 5 stars, some might be tempted to add some lightweight comment just to mine for these shiny thingies. 🙂

I was wondering which star to hit.. 4 ot 5?? 😄

Actually it's a 5..

Because what you say is true.

And maybe we should all be as brave as Ben.. And merit our stars in threads like these 😉

... and the world will be better for this
that one man scorned and lacking in stars,
still strove with his last ounce of knowledge,
to earn the un-earnable star.

I give answers 1 star when they are flat out wrong.

I hate receiving 1 star ratings on my posts, especially when there is a comment saying that I saved the life of some poor solenoids with my (1 star) answer. Fortunately, I have enough 5 star ratings to negate the occasional 1 star.

Want to know what made me sad and angry ?

Just look at that thread here.

Somebody with a twisted mind gave one star ratings to some of the people that congratulated me. Thanks to all of you who helped to restore a proper rating !
