"...so perhaps a high-level quantum programming language of the future could look like a sort of knot or could look like a children's game untangling the fishing lines..."
Haha, ok, now I am pretty sure that a future high-level quantum programming language will be in a form of a spaghetti LabVIEW code (in 3D of course)! 😄

He laughs but see here where we discussed the patent that NI has (or had) on 3D code.
The quick mock up posted there shows what coding in 3D could be if we are not disciplined with our diagrams worlds.

I went to put on some music this morning and was surprised to find an NI banner add on Spotify. To me, it seems strange that NI would even have these kinds of adds but I guess that's what I'm not on our marketing team.

Internet advertising is an odd duck all around. Companies that want to advertise online frequently go through "middle-man" ad agencies, who then sell to various sites, frequently for more that one client. A lot of online advertisement is "directed", where, in some database, or because of cookies on the target's computer, ads "relative" to them will then appear. I have seen, almost continuously of late, ads relating to things I have Googled, or looked at on Amazon, pop up on other sites when visited. The weirdest was when I spoke to a friend, in our office, about something relatively obscure, that I had not done a search for or looked at online, as I had purchased this piece of exercise equipment years ago, and was only mentioning it to him as my "out of town" apartment is above his, where I was going to use it. That evening, in my apartment, I get a directed ad for it while on Facebook, or Yahoo. Cue Twilight Zone theme music! If I was one of the "Lone Gunman" guys from the original X-Files I would say that his Android smart phone had heard it and ...

Once i heard an interesting story about a lady who started to get baby related ads. She was not aware of the fact yet that she was pregnant. But the intelligent algorithms figured it out based on her shopping lists, like change of appetite, etc.
I am not sure if this is a real story though... but crazy enough.
I read a recent article about how many people are moving back from USA to China recently, from IT and R&D sector. Not only because of the huge investments into these sectors in China. Also, because of the practical lack of human rights and data protection, data mining is a gold mine ( 🙂 ) in China. Imagine, if you are a researcher in this field, and you can gain access to 700 million people's data in great details. Crazy opportunities to train your software... Future is here, and i am not sure whether we will like it...

I agree with LV_Pro that this does not really depend on the hosting site, but on your google history. While it seems scary, most often they do actually get it right and I see more relevant ads.
Sometimes it is even telepathic. I recently was tweaking a bathroom vent because it was stuck and soon after I see ads about bathroom vents. 😮
Back on topic, I recently saw this somewhere on youtube:

I don't get too worried about targeted adds, I think of them more like seeing someone you know three states over. You think to yourself, "what are the chances of running into them?" and sure the chances of running into that specific person in that specific place are pretty low but if you think of all the places you go and all of the people you see that you don't know it's not that crazy. Similarly I talk about a lot of things in a day and see a lot of adds, it's not that crazy to think that they line up some times.
It's also not to surprising that in support I may be on the ni.com website quite a bit.

The NY Times says it is real. But to add a bit of a twist to the story, the girl was a teenager and her father was angry for Target sending his daughter coupons for baby stuff not knowing she was pregnant.

Funny that Google can get away with we can not.
I used to work the midnight shift to service the mainframes for U of Pitt. The head operator was rather prolific calling herself "Fertile Murtle". So after seeing her history and noticing a slight change I asked her...
Ben : "So I see you are once again with child?"
Jane: "No, Just fat!"
Yikes! I felt about 1 inch tall and slunk away in shame and learned my lesson to never suggest a woman was with child.
So like I said, Google can get away with what we can not.
