It's the Elvish word for "friend" (actually, a quick search seems to indicate it's "mellon") and served as the actual pass code for the door into Moria (at least in the movie. It's been several years since I read the books last).

I'd rather use "meldir" to avoid such "problems".

Elvish is just half-correct. It's Sindarin - if you use Quenya, there is málo or meldo (masculine).
