NIPM Installation Time

NIPM installation times have become very long lately.  I see this on every machine I use in various locations around the world so I don't think it is specific to a machine or to a location.

I used NIPM to upgrade the version of VI Package Manager on my local dev machine and it took 6 hours to complete.

I am currently trying to upgrade the NI ADAS toolkit from 2024Q3 to 2024Q1 on a machine in Detroit.  It has been installing on the machine overnight, now coming up on 14 hours and it is not showing close to complete.

I have turned off what security/scanning features I'm able but this seems like an issue with NIPM as it just seeems to sit for long periods of time with no acitivy shown on the system (low CPU, low network usage, low disk usage).

Is there any other way to install NI software?  I have seen some threads about using the NIPM CLI and about offline installations.  Do you recommend either of those to avoid long NIPM times.

The loss of development machines for a day at a time causes us to avoid updating any NI software.

I haven't experienced such long download times. At least not what you are describing.

We have indeed started to host our own package feeds in the internal network and install from there.

By the way, there is no immediate need to switch to the CLI with self-hosted feeds.

Yet depending on what you want to do, you open a whole other can of worms.

Regading your infrastucture: if security is turned off, maybe there is still a bandwidth limit on those connections due to VPNs used?

Oli, thanks for the suggestions.  It is not a network bandwidth issue on these machines as I have good connection and can download other files with no problem. It is certainly something in NIPM getting stuck.

I'm looking to try an offline installation mechanism but the only instruction I can find indicates I first need to do an online installation to a machine and then create the repo from there:

Is there a better way you have found to get the files?  I can't seem to download directly from ni.com, when I follow the path for the feed from the NIPM it doesn't populate (perhaps that is part of the issue).

It also looks like from the link I found that if I go offline I'm purely in the world of CLI.  Feels like the next step will be creating an script and simple UI for other users and then I'm reinventing and working around the NIPM.

So status update.  After trying to install for almost 24 hours it failed.

I rebooted and the install went cleanly and quickly.  So I guess my lesson is to reboot the system before attempting an install.

Litterally every IT support meme about turning it off and back on going through my head...
