Automatic surface inspection

Message contains an image

My problem is the following. I have a surface, and I have to detect all of defects on it. I don't have any good idea how to find them. In the attachment, you can see a small surface defect. My project is: find and localize all of these defects automatically, and measure them. What kind of image processing tools can be used to find and measure (area) them?
Measuring them is not as important as than finding, and localizing them.
First of all, using a morphological procedures could be a good start, but I don't know to detect these defect automatically...

What I really need is an algoritmn, or a procedure to find these defects!

Thank you very much!

(It seems, the lightening is not the best, let assume we have!)

Hi,

I am using a laserscanner found here http://www.micro-epsilon.co.uk/products/dimension-2D-3D-sensors/laser-scanner-profile-sensor/scanCON...

to analyze and find defects on the surfaces of aerospace components made out of titanium.

Best regards,

Mattias

It seems, it can be a good procedure to process the image...

Thank you very much!!!

Re: Automatic surface inspection

Hmm... I was wondering about using a laser too.

Could you tell me something more about this kind of surface inspection, or give me a link? You could be very helpful!

Thank you very much!!!

Re: Automatic surface inspection

Hi Mattias!
You suggested me a kind of solution with laserscanner and is sounded interesting! Could you give me any further information about "detect surface defect using laserscanner" or could you navigate me where I can read about this procedure?

Thank you very much!

Hi!

I use the sensor 2710 for scanning a surface. Its a line scanner, so I put each line next to

eachother to create a 3D surface. By analysing this surface can a computer calculate defects

and measure with very high accuracy.

Look at this site to find more detailed information:

Please contact me if you have any additional questions.

With best regards and wishes for a happy new year!

Best Regards and Happy new Year!!!

Thanx for helping me!
Here is my mail: durnek60@gmail.com , please send me an e-mail, and we could continue our discussion about laser scanning. (it is very important for me)

Re: Automatic surface inspection

I would also consider the SICK line of 3D measurement systems.  They work the same way as the uE systems.  They also have options where the camera is separate from the laser line generator, which gives you an infinite number of options of scale and resolution.
