Did you mean:

remove password from protected block diagram

Solved!
Go to solution

I just started working at this company to help convert their systems to Windows 10 and LabVIEW 2020. I have found one (for now) VI that had been password protected. Other files are not protected. I am not sure if this was done by a former disgruntled employee/contractor. We have asked them but have not found the password.

What I want to know if there is a backdoor way to unlock the block diagram? We are willing to send the file to NI to have them unlock it rather than give out the backdoor password.

If you can determine that the VI in question was developed by an employee in your company/organization who put in an unauthroized Password that effectively denies your company the "fruits of its labors", I recommend you talk to your Supervisor and Legal Team and have them make an "official" request of NI to unlock (if this is possible) the VI.

On the other hand, if the VI in question is one that NI considers their proprietary product, you might be able to explain what you need to accomplish, and see if they can suggest a alternate (and legal) means to do so with LabVIEW.

Sure. It might not be legal, although it might be if it's your IP.

These might or might not work:

GitHub - rcpacini/LabVIEW-VI-Hacker: Unlocks password protected LabVIEW VIs

LabView VI File Format (hmilch.net)

Also see this (which is mostly useless):

Unlock a Password Protected VI in LabVIEW - NI

Thank you or the recommendations. The problem has been resolved.

I have found another file that had the same issue. There were numerous very short term people who had worked here over the last year or so. It is impossible to know exactly who may have password protected the files or prove that they were responsible for password protecting the files.

Those were not NI files. I would never modify NI files because future releases may over write any changes made.

Just keep in mind that it is just like picking a lock on a door: it's only legal if it's a door to your own property.

This seems to be your situation, otherwise I wouldn't have helped by posting the links (that google will give too).
