export hierarchy

Solved!

When I open up an VI, this VI calls to other VIs in a hierarchy structure.  Is it possible to output the entire hierarchy tree of VIs into a separate directory so I don't have to manually locate them one by one?

File->Save As... and select the "Duplicate hierarchy to new location" option.

it returns "labview: generic file IO error" without any codes but the hierachy is showing all the VIs just fine.  I don't know why it won't export them all.

Haven't seen that error in a while... are you trying to save to a network drive?  Does it happen regardless of the target directory?  I'm not sure I can help with a solution, just tossing out questions in the hope that one of them might provide a clue as to the reason for the error.  Do any files get saved, or it happens immediately?

no just local drive

it somehow exported half of the tree, the other half is still missing.

oh I got it, the path was too long....it would be nicer if it tells us but it didn't.  Also, once I converted the xcontrol to ctrl and use it, it jacks everything up.  That was a nightmare having to fix all the broken links because it refuses to let me export the xcontrol as the same name it has in memory.  So when I change it to a different name, it exports fine but when I run the VIs, it refuses to load the new xcontrol file name.... oh well.
