Writing to a control cluster

I have a type definition that contains
a cluster of controls whose value is derived
from other fields in the type def. The problem
is on the front panel where they are accessed.
After controls were changed the derived fields
are re-calculated and written to a local.

This re-wrote the old data back onto the panel.

Is there a better way to achieve controls and
indicators in a cluster? Am I just too attached
to the concept of record structured data?

Issues with writing back to controls are that:
1) It can confuse user,
2) If user changes that control, and program does not update it before
saving or doing something else, then there will be errors.
You could solve both of those issues by temporarily splitting the cluster in
control cluster and indicator cluster which would get recombined in the
permanent cluster behind the scene. Using local or shift register for the
control cluster.

Hope it helps,
