What is PID?

I am new to the world of LabVIEW and automation. I am making a program to control a solid state fermentation reactor with LabVIEW 6i and FieldPoint. I was asked to learn about PID. So, what is PID?

That is a huge question with many layers. PID stands for Proportional, Integration and Derivative control. There are many books and just as many seninars on this topic. Many of the motor & control manufacturers offer free and almost free seminars on this topic. I suggest you start there. If you have a more specific question, repost

That's it in a nutshell. FWIW, the Integral part helps eliminate steady-
state tracking errors, but might introduce instability. The derivate part
helps with following transients, but might introduce added ripple.

The old timers used to tune these loops with analog computers! Just turn a
knob till it looks right.

You might be interested in reading http://zone.ni.com/devzone/learningcenter.nsf/03f7c60f17aad210862567a90054a26c/07ec98a9c134d0b2862568cd00664ad3?OpenDocument

It is entitled "PID and Fuzzy Logic Control Systems"

You might want to look for more info. Goto www.ni.com >> support >> advanced search (it is at the bottom--click on the words). This is the best way to search NI's web site because it allows users to limit their search to resources of interest. In your case enter pid in the all the words field, search everything, and press go.
