USB-6008 Loss of communication after running for a couple of days

I am using USB-6008 for a monitoring system and it tends to lose communication after a couple days of running.  The green indicator will stop blinking on USB-6008 OEM.

Unplug the USB cable, wait for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.  About 1 minute later, the communication can be re-established.

Has anyone seen this problem before?

I have not seen that problem, but here are a couple ideas. Have you tried a different computer? We had a PC that would lose track of one of its USB connections every now and again. The symptom was the same - the device (a Belkin RS232 converter) simply stopped working. Unplugging it, waiting and plugging it back in corrected the problem.

Second, when you lose contact with the device is it still visible in the Windows device manager?

Hi hellolv,

Are you using a hub? (If so, is it USB powered or externally powered? Also, do you have multiple 6008’s plugged into the hub – if so, they may draw too much current to run properly at times.) Are you working from a laptop or desktop? Try using another USB port. If on a desktop, try with a USB port in the back, connected directly to the motherboard. Is this problem consistent (always happens after (nearly) the same amount of time). Does the problem happen on other computers, especially different brands or models? Do you have other 6008’s which exhibit the problem?

Have you ever actually seen it crash, and what happens when it crashes? With answers to these questions, we can try to track down the root cause of these connection issues.

Hi  David L.,

Is there any way I can re-establish communication by using watchdog in some ways?

Hellolv,

We cannot use a watchdog, as this is used for setting a device’s digital states after a period of no activity. This feature is also not supported on the 6008. Do you have another 6008 you can test with? Does this happen on all computers? Have you tried different USB ports? If you can answer some of the questions from previous posts, I can have a better idea of the situation and try to narrow down what may be causing your issue.

ya sometimes if we use USB printers or pen drive this might stop the USB 6008 stops communication, i faced this problem couple of times, but when we remove that printers and accessories it will work, but i wonder why the pen drives was not detecting after this. sp check any printers are there with the host PC.

I am trying to reboot Windows or restart the vi after the loss of communication is detected.  Does any one have any experience in this?

Hellolv,

One suggestion may be to combine the information in this knowledgebase and this knowledgebase to shutdown the computer. You can also turn your program into an exe and put it in the startup menu so it begins with the computer. I may note to put a wait period (dependant on how long your computers start up processes take) in the program initialization step so that the program does not start before the USB device is recognized again.

I am having the exact same problem.  I have four 6008 devices plugged into a hub (the hub is powered by a wall mount AC-DC converter).  I am using only 1 DI and 1 counter on each device, not too hard on either the hardware or PC.  After running for a few days, the communication is lost, the VI stops updating, and the PC needs to be rebooted (and sometimes the USB hub needs to be unplugged for a minute as well) to reestablish communications.  When the communication is lost, the devices are not showing up in MAX either.  The computer is not being used for any other tasks during this time.  It is a desktop PC with the USB hub plugged into one of the ports on the rear of the PC.  Any help would be greatly appreciated- this is quite a troublesome problem.  Thanks!

besser,

Can you reproduce the loss of communication with only one USB-6008 plugged into the computer? As David pointed out "multiple 6008’s plugged into the hub ... may draw too much current to run properly". Otherwise, you may want to try his other suggestion in message 8 of this thread.
