Labview 8 Crashes without warning

Hello All,
Have any Labview 8 users out there experienced the package suddenly crash without warning?
I've had it happen several times now (at least twice in one month ....with approx 5hrs day/5day/week usage).
Last time it happened I was simply moving components around in a very simple VI when it suddenly exited without warning (i.e. all Labview tasks disappeared.....and I lost my work!)
The problem doesn’t seem to be specific to any one particular VI or its contents. I can’t reproduce the problem either.
Needless to say, I've not any other app. crash the same way on this PC. (Brief System Summary below)
Typically, I only have 2-3 other apps running (e.g. Outlook, Windows Explorer etc) when it happens.
When you restart Labview, it warns that it didn't close properly last time & points you in the direction of the log file.
I've posted one sample log file to NI, but they couldn't explain the cause (simply suggested de-installing, re-installing or, installing on another PC)
I have de-installed & reinstalled ....but yesterday, the problem occurred yet again.
Will try on another PC …..if/when I get spare time!
Anyone else with similar experiences??
Regards all,
Paul Towle.

Maybe you could try defragging your PC's hard drive the next time you do a re-install?

I've used LabVIEW 5, 6.1 and 8 and various computers at various companies, and
I haven't seen this behavior.

Hi,

The suggestions so far seem quite reasonable. It would be interesting if this problem is reproduceable on another machine. Perhaps you could attach the log file for the next occurance and keep us informed about whether it is occuring on another PC. Did you encounter any problems during installation of LV8, perhaps something wrong with the installation file, scratch on cd? I gather LabVIEW crashes when in the development environment and not necessarily during runtime of your VI? Are you performing any data acquisition or doing any kind of instrument control? Please ensure you stick to the recomended software installation order i.e. LabVIEW first and then Drivers. It would be nice to know what the CPU / other resource usage is like at the time it crashes, although probably not doable because difficult to predict the next crash. It is a good idea to monitor which applications are open at the same time and monitor their activity but will inevitably be difficult to track if there is any conflict. Does LabVIEW slow down before the crash ... or is it a instantanous and unexpected?

Hi Guys,

Well,  I tried most of the things suggested here (different PC, re-installation etc etc) ....but still had random crashes.

Since then, NI have revised Labview to 8.0.1.  Smiley Happy

I've installed this latest version ....and guess what!?.........no more crashes (.....so far!  Smiley Wink )

Regards to all,

Paul T.
