I think I have managed to crack it, there were two vis that needed to be called up first.

Here's an example taking a class constant and creating the DVR:

The "Set Value" VI is just a dummy, but it looks like this (approx like yours):

Here I didn't close the DVR - you should also in a real application use "Delete Data Value Reference", probably in some sort of "Close.vi" for your class.
