Cannot find daqmx device in project

- In my project which is very large now I cannot access the DAQmx physical device using constants, controls or DAQ Assist express VI.
- When I try to use a constant or control [DAQmx Physical Channel ] or [DAQmx Device Name] no device shows up.
- LabVIEW will shutdown half the time when I attempt to open the constant [DAQmx Physical Channel ] or [DAQmx Device Name] from the project.
- When I use NI MAX I can see the device and control it.
- The device is a National Intruments Data Aquisition box M-Series 6289 USB. I have only this style of device. I have two 6289's and have tried both.
- If I create a new VI not in my project it does work.
- I have updated the NI-DAQmx software on my PC and found no change.
Are there project settings for DAQmx? I can't find any.
Has anyone come across this?
