Calling other applications from Labview

We are trying to control our photon counting board (Becker-Hickl SPCM 600) using Labview drivers obtained from manufacturer. We would like to execute (namely be able to start and stop measurement) another Becker-Hickl developed application (SPCM 8.1) from our Labview 7.1 routine.
Is it possible to call other programs from Labview, and what is the best way to do it.

Use the System Exec vi found in Functions - Communications palette.
