Option to De-"Expressify" Express VIs

In moderation I find that certain Express VIs are quite useful, in particular Elapsed Time, Time Delay, File Dialog, and Prompt User, but I really dislike the default behavior.  I would like to choose when I go to the configuration page, and I never use the default view. 

So, to make these things a bit more palatable (palette-able), I would prefer a setting (INI key or Environment Option) to De-Expressify the Express VIs, meaning that they drop silently to icon view like any other subVI.  You can still double-click for the config page when desired, for the ones I use I rarely need to configure anything.

It just makes them fit a little better into the normal workflow for the non-newbie users.  Right now I have palette items which do nothing but drop iconified Express VIs.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you want, but there should already be an option for not showing the config dialog when dropping the VI. It's probably in the BD page of the options dialog.

Also, I'm not sure, but I think there's also an option for dropping them as icons and not as expanded. Presumably it would be in the same place.

Well I hope you are right, I looked a long time ago but could not find the options and went the palette route. I bow to your superior knowledge of Express VIs. 🙂

If you go Options, Block Diagram, there is a "Configure Express VIs immediately" option (at least as of 8.6)

For some reason I expected an Express subsection, indeed in the General BD options I can ditch the configuration.

Pop up on the subVI and choose "View as Icon". That option is available on all subVIs, but it defaults to false for Express VIs.

Would have been hard to create my custom palette items which drop as Icon View had I not known about that Right-click menu item...

There is a Place subVIs as expandable check box, which is (unhelpfully, in this case, near the show terminals as icons check box and is) probably what I was thinking of, but the help for it says it doesn't affect express VIs.

This functionality is available in LabVIEW versions 7.0 and later.

For the record, my idea is to have the option to drop the ExVIs directly as icons, without the need to right-click. This is certainly NOT in LV7 or later. May not happen for many reasons, I just do not buy that one.
