Easy Set Breakpoint

Status: Declined

In the Run Mode we can set the breakoint by pressing the <Ctrl> key and left click over the probe. To remove it the vice versa applies...

In the Edit mode it would be more handy to set the Break point by Pressing <Ctrl><Shift> key and left click over the probe to set and remove the Break points.

I have checked the Functionaltiy of the <Ctrl><Shift> key when both are pressed the mouse pointer changes into a hand tool and we can move the BD on anyside but it doesn't have any effect over the probe and on the Front panel.

So this idea would defenetly help to make easy debugging..

Or you could just right click like you can already do now.

Yup but it consumes time... Up to my experience i always set break point mostly in the edit mode and not in the run mode but the current way is easy to set the break point in the Run mode and not in the Edit mode...Smiley Sad

Well, you still can switch the VI into run mode (without execution) by hitting CTRL+M and then CTRL+klick the wire where you want a breakpoint. CTRL+M to switch back to edit mode ... but it still consumes more "time".

Ya but thats not the Easy way while debugging right... In that mode you will not be able to wire anything again we have to switch back for wiring.

Correct, you'd have to switch back to edit mode for normal wiring.

So the best way is to do the right click method that I mentioned.  You said "it consumes more time".  How much time does it consume?  No more than a second.  To me a second saved per probe placed is not worth the effort of the LV developers to add the idea you are suggesting.  But the biggest problem is that in order to implement it, you said a control-shift would be the modifier for the left click.  We already have enough modifiers for clicking going on in the block diagram.  More than I can remember.  So adding another modifier combination will be just one more thing I could never remember, and it would get in the way of trying to use the modifiers that are already implemented.

Another way you can quickly set multiple probes without needing modifiers or going through the right click menu is to shift-right click on the diagram and the tool palette comes up.  Pick the Probe tool  (arrow with circle-P on it).  Now you can left click wherever you want to put a probe.

My mind had shifted to probes.  And that would be the situation where you would save more time because you are much more likely to set several probes.  When setting a breakpoint, you would likely only set one or two at a time.  But there is also a breakpoint tool on the tools palette.

In fact Probe tool is also there.. But the easy will not be going to that tool and setting the break points ( ofcourse probes)...
