Create the OPPOSITE of KUDOS ie BOO!

Status: Declined

How often have you seen this sort of thing.

There is a silly idea, but it seems to have lots of votes (or more votes than it should compared to other good ideas).

In this silly case the idea has 634 kudos and it may even have a chance of being implemented in the next update of LabVIEW

but you are sure that there must be at least the same number of people who positively hate this idea but we have no idea of telling this.....

You want to BOO or give a thumbs down but at the moment you can't.

eg.

Negative Kudos 1.gif

Well if the LabVIEW Idea Exchange had a BOO button like this

Boo Button.gif

or it could be a thumbs down icon

then the problem would be solved.

We would then know how many people HATE the idea and not just those who love it...

so instead of just positive kudos we would judge a good idea by the RATIO of Good to Bad votes....

This I think would far better reflect the relevance, importance etc of an idea-  what does everyone else think???

But then again - If I get no negative Kudos  who would know??????

At the moment the kudos assumes that each person who submits a kudos knows what he is talking about....

Here is what it would look like - and we would know that 634 kudos is no longer considered so good anymore when we know that it also got 99,999 boo's.

I think this is what comments are for. The hypothetical idea that had 300 kudos and 300 boos would likely have a really long chain of comments associated with it where people explain their thinking. Since the NI engineers are going to be reading the comments anyway before deciding on implementing a feature, I don't think a boo is going to add anything that is not already there.

@C. Minnella - A benefit over just comments is that it would provide a quick glance summary of the current position of the idea, without having to read through all the comments.

I perhaps should have made my original posting clearer.

I think many of the commenters of this idea have failed to understand the main point about adding a boo button. It is NOT that a silly idea will get implemented, or that NI engineers will read the comments anyway an therefore not do it or that an idea with 300 kudos and 300 boos will most likely have lots of comments etc etc. It is the fact that MANY people do not add ANY COMMENTS. so a boo button is for those people.  I have kudo'd lots of ideas, but I feel there is nothing to comment on as I accept everything the author of the idea has said.. but likewise I don't add my comments to bad ideas very often.  What I'm saying is that if two ideas have an equal number of kudos, and they are NOT INSANE, (ie NI will actually think of implementing them) then what does NI or anyone else have to go on other than positive comments and positive kudos.. many people don't even have time to kudo every idea let alone write a comment on it.. has anyone seen how many ideas there are now in the ideas exchange?? You would have to have a full time job just to read them all let alone have the ability to comment meaningfully on them... so for this reason the idea that bad ideas will always have a comment or a comment that reflects what most people think is crazy in my mind...I don't leave negative comments - so all bad ideas don't get my commenting,  So for this reason we need a Boo button.

I voted for this because I think that it would be good to provide people with a way to give their opinion with more granularity. I'm not sure that this system would be good, though. When trying to think of ideas I would BOO, I think that NI would not implement any of them anyway, thus making my BOOs, at least, useless.

What I would actually prefer is a more complicated system where people have limited resources. See our discussion here for more details.

@labview4steve I get your point but IHMO I still believe the ability to leave a 'BOO' and not a comment does not contribute very much to community. If a 'negative' vote was allowed, then a comment should be mandatory.

@jgcode fair enough, but from the same reasoning why be forced to leave a mandatory comment for the positive kudos as well? this would stop people randomly clicking on every idea the look at, and at the moment you can only leave a kudo or nothing - so how do you give 5 thumbs up or only 1... at the moment it gotten to rediculous levels where there are almost too many ideas to even look at let alone waste time with any sort of commenting either way..I mean how much time do you have to go back and forth reading and replying to stuff? Anyway its good that you did comment so thanks..

this is an interesting thread to read....

hummmm...  to Boo or not to Boo...

It has crossed my mind..  which led me here 🙂

I will continue to read other people's comments...

It was chosen when Idea Exchange was first being tossed around to not have a vote down option. If users don't think that an idea is not good then they can just not vote for it or even better is provide more insight why they don't like the idea through comments. Quickly being able to like an ideas is okay. Once ideas start to rise to the top, then NI considers them and whether they are physically possible to implement and if they are then if we should implement them. LabVIEW for Time Travel might be an awesome yet silly idea but if the community says they like the idea enough then NI will consider the topic and decide one way or another.

yes...yes...  I like that...  "LabVIEW for Time Travel" is a wonderful idea.  I wish it could take me back to when I was six..

back to reality...

So that means we should comment into threads where we do not like the idea..

-wow-  that's going to bump up my post count 😄

LOL!
