Avoiding Software Sins when Aiming for Maintainability as a Team's Architect

Derrick Bommarito

When aiming for a combination of extensibility and ease of use in a team's framework there a myriad of traps to fall into that have the opposite of the intended effect on maintainability. Sometimes it takes years to hit maintenance hell and sometimes it happens much much quicker. This exmples in the discussion will be building on top of Actor Framework but the ideas demonstrated should apply to all software development. Most software will eventually reach an "unmaintainable" state and we'll look at concrete examples that can help push out the timeline on your software's demise.

6x6 Open Mic!

We're going to try something a little different this time.  Drawing on the highly successful 7x7/lightning round format commonly seen at the GDevCons and other events, we're going to open the floor to the membership for 36 minutes of short presentations.  Do you have a trick, technique, or tool you're dying to show off?  You get six minutes to say your piece.  First come, first served, so put your idea in the comments.  Or just show up with one.

Important note:  NI's visitors must sign in with security to gain access to our meeting space.  Due to staffing issues, no one from that team is available after 6:30 pm.  Therefore, anyone wishing to attend this event *must* arrive before 6:30 pm.  We won't be able to admit anyone after that time.

This sounds great. Unfortunately I won't be able to attend in person or remotely. Will there be a YouTube recording of the event?

I'll definitely attend at least remote.  Possibly in person since I'm going to be in that neck of the woods that week.  It'll be great to see everyone again.

I'm not able to join personally or per remote due to time zones (it is 1am in Austria). Is it possible to record the meeting?

We are trying to record them, but we haven't rediscovered how to post the recordings yet.  (There has been a certain amount of relearning after our hiatus; thank you for your patience.)  We'll work on it.

If you're still looking for any shorter presentations after Derrick, I have some custom TestStand steps I've been working on that I could show off. Built in LabVIEW though I suppose it's really TestStand content so let me know if it doesn't fit (you won't hurt my feelings).

The goal of the TestStand steps is to be able to very easily load JSON data from a config file into TestStand properties during runtime.
