GPIB-USB-HS hangs

I have a problem with my GPIB-USB-HS interface. It works OK communicating with a Keithley 196 DMM but after reading the value from the DMM a number of times I get an error. The error message is:

Error -1073807194 occurred at VISA Read in Read_DVM.vi->test.vi
Possible reason(s):
VISA:  (Hex 0xBFFF00A6) The connection for the given session has been lost.

After this has happened the GPIB interface hangs and I can no longer communicate with it. If I try with MAX I get error message saying that the GPIB interface has been incorrectly configured.

If I unplug the GPIB interface and plug it in again the interface starts to work again. I am running Windows 2000 and labview 8. The USB port is USB 1. Not sure whether 1.0 or 1.1.

Has anyone else had a similar problem or know what is going wrong.

Thanks for any help
Julian

What is your VISA and NI-488.2 version?  After you experience the error, try running the GPIB Getting Started Wizard (on your start menu, National Instruments, NI-488.2, )--I'm curious to know if the interface passes the tests once it's in the "bad state".

Thanks for the reply Scottie.

I have NI 488.2 version 2.4
and VISA version 3.4

I don't think I tried the the getting started wizard when it was in the hung state. I will try that later.

I am now testing the interface on another computer and I have no errors as yet.

I think there is a problem with operating system on the other computer I think it requires a reinstall of the operating system. The computer has been used by various users of various skill and is in a bit of a state.

Thanks again

Dear Scottie,

The GPIB getting started wizard also comes up with an error saying the GPIB interface is incorrectly installed.

Hmmm, yes, it sounds like your computer "forgets" the PCI-GPIB is in the system.  It may even disappear from the device manager (might want to check that).  Is this the computer on which you are going to do an OS reinstall?  If so, I bet the problem will go away after that.  Something appears to be messed up with the enumeration services or something similar.
