GPIB-USB-HS Not recognized

I recently purchased a GPIB-USB-HS interface.  I then installed Labview RT 5.1 and now my GPIB interface is not recognized.  I don't currently have a budget to upgrade my copy of Labview, is there any way to get these to work together?

Hi,

Are you using LabVIEW Real Time 5.1? If so, the only version of NI-488.2 supported is 1.0 and that is only for a PXI-8156B controller with an onboard GPIB port.

Did you mean something different when you said LabVIEW RT 5.1? If so, can you clarify? Thanks!

Thank you for your reply.  Yes, I meant Labview Real Time.  My understanding is that the real time version does everything the normal Labview does except it adds the ability to compile real time code.  Is that not true?  In any case, that is the version I currently have.

I wanted to jump in and add a little clarification to your question.  On which computer are you trying to use the GPIB-USB-HS?  On a realtime target (such as a PXI controller) that is running the RT code (and is not running a Windows OS) or on a Windows host that happens to be compiling RT code for use on a realtime target?  The former case isn't going to work.

Sorry, I did not understand the gist of the first question.

I am running the interface on my laptop, which is a Gateway with a PIII under Windows XP SP2.  I will also want to run it on my other laptop which runs Windows 2000.

So you are not trying to use the GPIB-USB-HS on a real time target? I'm not quite sure how LV RT 5.1 comes into play.  Can you give more information about your system setup and what you are trying to do?

Do you have a PXI chassis?

Thanks

The only reason Labview RT comes into play is that is the version I have.  I am not using a real time target, I am not using a PXI chassis, I have no desire to do a real time application, I am not using anything but a normal laptop with a USB-GPIB-HS interface plugged into the USB port.  This copy of labview is the only one our lab has and it has been removed from an older machine and installed onto my laptop.  That older machine had a PCI GPIB controller, but obviously that cannot be used with a laptop.

Thanks for the clarification.  Since you're not doing anything RT-related, you're just using "LabVIEW 5.1".  In order to get your GPIB-USB-HS recognized on your Windows 2000/XP PC, you need the NI-488.2 driver v2.3 that came with your device on a CD.  You can also download the driver here

Thanks for the reply.

I thought I was using the driver that shipped with the USB-GPIB-HS.  I installed that hardware first then installed LabView.  Would Labview have written over the driver for the HS even though those files would be newer than the files Labview is installing?  If I re-install the hardware now, will everything work OK, or will I need to do something else?

LabVIEW should not have overwritten the GPIB driver that you installed.  If you go to Start>>Control Panel>>Add or Remove Programs, then find National Instruments Software and click on this to view all of the NI software - what version of NI-488.2 do you see? If you installed version 2.3 it should show up there. Double check that, if you do not see the driver installed, then follow Scott's link to install the driver.  If you do see it installed and you still can't recognize your board, repost.

One more thing, what version of MAX do you have? You can check this in the same place as the NI-488.2 driver.
