GPIB-USB-B not working without admin login

I have successfully installed and operated the GPIB-USB-B interface. It is working with my non-admin account, when I connect the device as admin before.

But after disconnect/reconnect or sleep mode of my notebook, the interface does not operate anymore (when I am logged in as non-admin).

Driver and NI488.2 version is 2.1, HW is IBM Thinkpad 600X.

Is there a possibility to make the interface work independent from the account used?

Hello,
Unfortunately, the driver used by the GPIB-USB-B is an "unsigned" driver. Microsoft will not allow any unsigned driver to be installed under 2000 or XP without administrative access. So you have to be an administrator to install the driver.
Let me know if you have further questions.
Good luck and have a great day!
Thank You,

Hi, thank you for the explanation.

But, this is not quite what I understand as "plug and play", which I expect when using USB.

Will there be a "signed" driver available for the GPIB-USB-B in future, which will overcome this limitation?

I totally agree with TBerger. At the company where I work we have very tight security policies in place. Non-IT folks don't have Admin (or even Power User) privileges. When they go out on a field test, we have to make sure to temporarily put them in the Admin group so they can use their GPIB-USB-B interface device. If we don't do this, they have major problems and they may not get their EXPENSIVE data.

Any and all of the NI USB devices need to be "signed" by Microsoft. In a related vein, all hardware and software developed by NI should be accessed or run by someone with no Admin or Power User privileges.

KMoller,

We appreciate your feedback. We are currently evaluating Windows driver signing and will consider your feedback in our decision.

Has the NI-RS232-USB converters similar behavior?

For the NI-Serial (RS-232/422/485)-to-USB devices from a computer user Limited account:
1. The device will work in the same USB port that an Administrator had it plugged into before (and not manually un-installed).
2. After sleep/standby/hibernate if the device's serial port becomes un-usable, it can be made usable by unplugging the device from USB and plugging it back into one of the ports mentioned in 1.

Currently, though the NI-Serial PXI and PCI devices are Windows driver signed, the USB are not.

Has been any forward movement on getting this driver signed by Microsoft?? We have a field test next month that will require 5+ laptops and a host of GPIB Instruments. I would love to avoid the necessity of having to put the users in the Admin group and getting exceptions from managers on high to do it.
Thanks.

Hello,

The driver signature process is in general non-trivial; perhaps sanjay will reply with an indication of the current status, though you can trust that it'll be indicated as soon as possible so that users can avoid any unnecessary installation steps!
