I've been playing with a new image gallery feature that we could use on our forums.
If turned on, you could:
It seems pretty useful to me, but I don't have a good feel for how much everyone uses the image gallery functionality. I know that some users have stayed away from it altogether and continue to use the older method to embed images in their posts.
Thanks,
Laura

The only use I have for the image gallery is that I no longer have to attach the image to the post. I really don't need any additional functionality. I suspect the vast majority of the users (at least those who post images) are the same. I wouldn't be surprised if many aren't even aware that you can have an image gallery.

I would like the functionality you outlined.
I could sort my image in Olvia, Fun, Performance, etc then find the I want fast and then use it to get to the original thread.
So count me in.

I think that images posted from the private forums should be automatically embedded or at least automatically marked private.

The image gallery in its current form is pretty useless. It cannot be efficiently used once it contains a large collection.
Laura F. wrote:If turned on, you could:
- Organize your images into albums
- Move images between albums
- Select an album for your image while uploading it to your post
- Easily jump from the image page to the message that it appears in
- Upload up to 10 images at a time into your gallery
- Mark an entire album as private so images inside the album are also private
- Comment on and Kudo images inside the albums
These are all welcome improvements.
Here are some additional ideas:
Once an image gets embedded into a posts, it should be an internal copy of the gallery image so it remains in the posts even if the gallery image is deleted. (What good is a time limited post edit window if embedded images can be freely wiped out long after posting by simply deleting the gallery entry? This is a post edit too!).
Of course we don't want this to turn into a full blown foto sharing site with huge albums of the hawaii vacations or grandkids. OTOH, albums with travel photos from NI week would e nice...

Thanks for the feedback.
Luckily the albums are fairly non-invasive so if you choose not to use them, you won't experience any change from today. You'll just have a single default public album.
Another thing I like is that if you setup an album to be private and then select that album when uploading an images (say in a private forum) the image is automatically marked private.

I would very much like the option to HTTP POST an image to the forums with authentication.
Would that be possible?
If that is an option I could extend the Code Capture Tool with an option push images directly into the image box of a user.

Thanks.
For those with "Knight" badges, there is a formatting problem when looking at "all images". The badge is cutoff and the name does not show (except for a few lone pixels).
(Same problem for IE9 and Chrome browser)
