Encoder Referencing

I got a Redline Encoder Kit and hooked it up to a motor attached to a Talon SRX. I have the encoder output cord going into the top of the Talon SRX. I have tried getting feedback from the encoder but there has been no luck. How am I able to read the exact position of that motor using the encoder with FRC Labview code?
