NI 9403 timing hardware or only software

I'm confused on the NI 9403 documentation is it only software timing control? The specs say the 9403 cannot route clock and timing signal --> does this mean you cannot use hardware timing/triggering? Whenever I use a clock for acquisition the data always times out.

Looking for someone to confirm that this is how the 9403 functions on software timing only, using hardware clock, I don't get errors until the timeout occurs.

Is this a NI 9403 in a CompactDAQ chassis? The NI 9403 is a "serial digital I/O" module, and the documentation in Digital I/O Considerations for C Series Devices in the NI-DAQmx Help might be useful.

I'm using the 9188 chassis, the 9403 is a serial module...

"Software and hardware-timed digital input/output tasks2

You cannot use serial modules for triggering."

Although you can set it up using the Trigger VI, the trigger will always timeout. I would prefer an error at the trigger VI instead, oh well.
