Ebay ID Verify Fee

I got a notice that Ebay was going to charge my credit card $5.00 for an "ID Verify" service.  I protested, and after much frustration, they told me somebody accessed my account and signed me up.  They won't tell me when this was done "for security reasons".  I am very careful about phishing scams and such, so I find it hard to believe.  Has anyone else been charged this fee without asking for it?

Who gave you the notice?  The credit card company or Ebay?

It was Ebay.  "They" in my original post refers to Ebay.

Some of these phishermen are very clever about duplicating logos and letterheads and such.  I get such schemes to verify my personal info and the email looks very much like something from eBay.  But it isn't.  Be very careful.  I would contact eBay to see if all of this is true.
