As promised, attached is a pic of Einstein, one of our neighbors roosters. He is quite territorial and will rush the fenceline when anyone approaches. Very nice crown, reminds me of the 80's pop hair styles.

Yes, they can be annoying at times. They seem to start crowing every morning at 3:30-4AM. And with nice weather now and the windows open, that does not help. Our neighbors does give us fresh eggs from the hens though.

We have a couple acres of horse property in Buckeye, Arizona, about 30 miles west of Phoenix. We can have pretty much any animals except swine. Some of our neighbers have cows, goats, emus, peacocks (very noisy), chickens, in addition to a lot of horses. It's nice to be out in the 'country' with low density housing and being able to see from horizon to horizon. Most housing in the metro area is high density with hardly any back yards and block walls everywhere. You can literally jump from rooftop to rooftop. Yuck, not my kind of living.

I think they start crowing in response to something that happens every morning at 3:30-4AM.  Mine crow when I turn the light on to check the thermometer and again later when I open the garage door or start my car.  There are only two good things about roosters: they allow eggs to turn into new chickens, and they're made of meat!

I live in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, far enough out into the country to raise chickens (free-range chickens make the best eggs in the world, BTW) but close enough to civilization to work in the Aerospace industry.

Jim, which part of North Carolina?  I lived in Graham (next to Burlington) for 10 years.  Lots of open country in the surrounding area, and still close to Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and Greensboro.
