Spell Check

Status: New

A spell check button right on the LabVIEW toolbar would be grate great. Since the technology already exists in the VI Analyzer, I don't see this as being a huge developmental effort.

Yes, I know that a dedicated analysis configuration file can be made and launched easily, but it's not the same, and the Analyzer takes a while to load.

The funy thing about your example is that your misspelling would not have been caught by a spell checker since grate is an actual word. However I agree with your suggestion.

Funy, huh, Mark? Smiley Very Happy Well, I really like this idea.

There's one caveat that I'd like to hear some ideas on how to address: how do you mitigate the problem of properly checking all the technical/programming/variable name jargon?

For instance, I would want it to be "smart", and pass the "word" MainPumpPressure, but warn for a misspelling if you call it MainPummmpPressure. Also, I would want it to check all spellings that could be entered by the user: string constants, variable names, comments, case structure headings...

Comments, suggestions, insults, or questions?

I believe there is a spell-checking option in VI Analyzer. This would require the the Professional version or the toolkit.

According the the release notes for LV2009, the next release of LabVIEW will require you to purchase the VI Analyzer Toolkit separately regardless of your version (base/pro/devsuite).

Phillip, I mentioned in the Idea that spell check exists in the Analyzer. One thing we can do is make an Analyzer config file that just runs spell check, but the analyzer takes too long to launch for this to be convenient.

A spell-check is definetly, heu "definitely" a classical feature in now many applications - especially open-source software.

My preference goes to an on-line spellchacker like in MS-Word or in Mozilla Thunderbird.

I would use it every day...

When you are already on it, could you please include a possibility for spellchecks in different languages (in VI Analyzer and in LabVIEW).

Additional Idea: Create a spellcheck plugin system. So plugin developpers can write plugins for using existing spellcheckers (from an office application, [a/i/ie]spell, ...) The existing system would be the default, a different one could be configured.

The LabVIEW project or the VI should save the spellcheck language.

At a minimum we should have a spell check option for the VI Properties documentation window. In addition, this should not require any aditional toolkits and should be available in the base package. If code is getting written correctly the VI documentation should always be added. After all, it does provide the context sensative help and it would be helpful if the spell check option were available here to provide documentation that was at least free of spelling mistakes.
