Provide sorting options for controls under Edit Events Window >> Event Sources

Status: Completed

There is a search filter for the Event Sources list and the Events list in LabVIEW 2013 and later. You can type the first few letters of the control name in the filter string to easily find controls in the list.

Current controls listed under Event Sources in the Edit Events window are sorted chronologically (the oldest control at the top and the newest control at the bottom of the list).  I would like to see additional sorting options such as alphabetical, and be able to reverse the sorts (reverse chronological order, reverse alphabetical,...).  Also, I would like to type in a control name (or part of a control name with wildcards) to search for a control name or filter the list.

Good idea.

I think the Event structure need a MAJOR overhaul but each improvement would be welcome.

Great idea - not sure how I missed it when it was raised, but I was just about to submit the same idea.  One interesting thing is that other lists of controls (e.g. for Local Variables, or "Link To...") are sorted alphabetically, but with lower case coming after upper case.  I suppose this could be useful (start all secondary controls with lower case) but it also means having to look in two places for a given control.

I think for all those lists it would help if there was an option to search in the list (not only just the first letter like with local variables) basically a new window pops up when pressing a search button with a behavior close to the windows help->search function listing all entries compliant with the string you keep on typing in...

General sorting of lists of controls is in this idea.

Multiple posting of the same idea.

And it's really needed. I gave kudos to all the Idea posts about this issue. I hope NI really works on it in the next version. And I am surprised I never put it in the Idea Exchange although I always felt the control selection is not very good. I blamed myself for not planning the controls well in advance so that I can always find them in the proper order :(, but I suppose it's not about me. 😉

I would love this improvement. Sorting yes, but searching definitely.

I would like the Find context menu to also list events associated with a front panel object as well as Local Variables, Terminal, References, Property Node etc.

Perhaps I should file that as a new idea.

Anyway Kudos for this one. Double Kudos if it includes a search!

LV 2013 already includes a search - there's a text box in the event configuration window which you can type into to filter the list of controls.
