Recycling answers

I recycle answers. I just recycled one about internal errors (original and recycled.) Also, is it me, or do you too notice that sometimes a very similar question show up with very little time in between, but posted by different persons? (probably a sign these are students)

Sometimes I think I am recycling too much. Not that it is a bad thing, but, the answer was already out there in the clear... just around the corner...

Just trying to understand this strange world called the "NI Discussion Forums". It may give us clues about our "wired soul". (pondering smiley here)

I suspect you are correct on all points.

I think it is not too late for me to dredge up one of my old ideas about the Exchange.

I think the "frequently flyers" should be given the opertunity to "clasify" threads by topic.

This would in turn make it possible to sort the Exchange based on topics.

Some people may even be interested in only subscribing to some sub-topics like "Performance" while others susscribe to "GUI tricks".

Of course Molly and gang would have to do some big time re-work to make that happen, but that has never stopped from asking before!

I would just like to remind that Molly promised us a FAQ section which will cover the common questions. That was several months ago, so I hoped we would have seen something by now.

Yepp,

The 'oh no, this has been answered thousand times '  'Arrgh, SEARCH! before you ask'   thoughts Smiley Mad

Now I know what the star is good for Smiley Very Happy

That's why a FAQ makes sense and why I asked Molly to increase the default search back time.

Solong it depends on us to be polite or just don't answer...

Yes, I have seen the same patterns of similar questions popping up. There is even a short thread here about it

http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=BreakPoint&message.id=1372

A good FAQ topic would be starting out with serial communication. Same problems/solutions come up time after time (echo?wink smiley ). I'm sure Dennis K. would agree.

Hey all -

Allow me give an update on this one...

We understand that seeing the same question over and over again is unhealthy for such a smart community as ours.  We have tried to reduce the amount by requiring that users search before they post a new question, but we can't force people to read the results even if they are there. 🙂

In a recent upgrade, the default search timeframe was cut to 7 days.  We hope to resolve this and set it back to "anytime" shortly.

I did get some resources to work on writing a FAQ for each board, but unfortunately they got reassigned to something else.  In the meantime, if you start using the "Report to Moderator" option on some of your most commonly "recycled" answers, we can slowly build the FAQ together.  Will that work?
And, longer term, we are working ideas such as 'tagging' that will allow you, the users, to categorize the content which should help out as well.

Thanks!

Thanks Molly!

There are many questions where I feel "cheap" if I reply to them because I have answered that Q previously.

That sounded to me like second hand smoke Smiley Very Happy

Anyway, what if the people asking is responsible, that is, they will not repost a question already answered. Assuming that is true, why then we still see answered questions over and over? Maybe the "search" box intention is not clear... Maybe people don't see it because is blue... Maybe the search results look intimidating... Maybe is way too easy to post a question... Maybe they are hoping to get a better answer...

Often the particularly novice users do not know enough to properly phrase the question.  Making search usless and the questions difficult to parse. Robot Sad

You have all the resources you need right here. Instead of reposting, I assure you some of enthusiasts will be glad to submit entries for such a FAQ , as we have suggested back then, making it happen much faster than going through NI personnel. Is that not an option for you?
