Gateway/Node Authentication Process

Is there any technical information available that describes the authentication process between the gateway and the nodes?  The work environment I am in requires a detailed approval process for wireless equipment.  I am looking for information that demonstrates the system is secure with regards to the acceptance of nodes by the gateway.
