myDAQ CantileverBeam

Introduction

MyCanltileverBeam is a student project that is intended to demonstrate several core engineering principles and show how a PC based test and measurement system can be set up using the NI MyDAQ and NI LabVIEW. The aim of the exercise is to measure strain in a metal beam that is fixed at one end and free at the other. Different weights will be applied in a variety of positions on the beam and the results analysed. The strain measurement will be compared with a theoretical strain value and also used to calculate the Young’s modulus of the material.

All the data acquisition, analysis, processing and presentation of the data will be done using NI LabVIEW.

Material

  • 2 Strain Gauge 120Ω when idle
  • 6 Resistors 120Ω
  • Insulated Copper Wire
  • Material to measure and analyse (an aluminium bar)
  • Weight Cradle
  • G Clamp
  • Epoxy Resin
  • Soldering Iron

Software

The front panel allows you to enter in values for the weight being applied and the distance it is from the clamp point. This is also where you manually control the offset of the two signals so that they are zeroes when at rest. Indicators and a graph show the results.

This project is very useful in helping me set up a strain gauge test for my mechanical engineering senior project. Thanks for sharing the info!
