Hi. I have a customer who would like to make some LVDT measurements. Neither I not they are familiar with these sensors. We are looking at the SCXI LVDT module, but I am wondering if there are now "preconditioned" LVDT sensors available that just output a voltage signal or digital signal without the need for providing the AC signals and performning the demodulation. This would greatly simplify their DAQ setup and costs.
Thanks!

Hi Jed,
Unfortunately, we don't have any recommended LVDT sensors. However, there is a LabVIEW example that takes LVDT measurements. To check it out, navigate to:
Help » Find Examples » Hardware Input and Output » DAQmx » Analog Measurements » Position » Cont Acq LVDT Samples
You mentioned you're not familiar with LVDT measurements. Here are a couple links that will explain the basics: Fundamentals, LVDT Measurements. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. The SCXI setup would cost about $4000, which is somewhat hefty.
Analog devices makes a $20 single chip demodulator/amplifier for LVDTs. So I was hoping that there might be integrated Sensor/Amplifier parts out there, or low-cost amplifiers so that we would just need to read a simple analog signal.
I just don't know where to source the parts.

I used Schaevitz LVDTs in the past, Both kinds (country and western 😉 ) just the transformer sensor and with DC output.
Ask your customer if he is already fixed to a certain type ... usually this type is choosen because of its mechanical livetime
Using a DC voltage sensor in industrial enviroment is sometimes challenging, a good LVDT conditioner (I used HBM) with a pure LVDT can solve such problems.
However there are more µ-epsilon, asm, ....
