hat real time controllers actually support the 9157 mxie chasis?? apparently even though ni's documentation says a ni 3110 industrial controller should it does not.

Hi tbenn7362,
The 3110 running either Windows OS or Real-Time OS is capable of communicating with the 9157 through the MXI connection. However communicating with the 9157 while running Hypervisor on the 3110 is not supported and is documented in the KB linked bellow. Is it possible that you are running in Hypervisor on your 3110 and this is the reason you are having issues with the 9157?

Hello tbenn7362,
I do want to mention that there is a workaround for supporting MXIe-RIO access from a 3110 hypervisor system (this involves a few INI file changes). This workaround is not officially supported, but I can assist with this process if you are interested in proceeding.
