text on the solder mask layer

Sometimes it is useful to be able to place text into the solder mask layer, such as writing on a large copper area without using the silk screen. It's really a style thing more than a functional requirement, but why not allow text on the solder mask layer? I know you can force text onto non-standard layers by switching to the layer with the "Favorite Layers" shortcut, but if we can have text on the keep-out layer (why???) then why not the solder mask layer?

that is interesting, text is an object, it should be a valid placeable object

Hi Ryan,

I haven’t seen text on a solder mask layer before but I will create a feature request for it.  Typical, I will see text on copper and if you want that area expose you can place a shape on the soldermask layer.

It's more for stylized logos and such on boards. How else would you get brilliant gold lettering on a ground plane? 🙂
