analog output connection

I observed that the analog output of a DAQ card always consists of steps. These can be small depending on the output rate configured. I wonder if it is a good idea to insert a low pass filter (cut off frequency sufficiently high enough to smooth out the step edges) between the DAQ card analog output and the external circuit? Or is there a better way to achive a smooth analog output?

I was wondering if you could either use a Low Pass filter or if you could increase the resolution used to generate your analog output. How smooth does your waveform need to be?
