Hi there Andy,
Thanks for posting on the NI Forums.
It's been a while since I upgraded from MAX 3.0 so I had to refresh my memory on this one. I had a PC running MAX 3.1.1 so I tried this out on your behalf. I created a Traditional DAQ channel and scale then upgraded to MAX 4.0.3 using the latest driver CDs. The channel and scale were both present after the upgrade, so I would expect your channel and scale configurations to be preserved.
I hope this helps.
Rob

I tried installing MAX 4.0, however it does not seem to have installed correctly, as it takes about 3 minutes to load and no devices can be seen. I think the best course of action would be to uninstall MAX completely and start again, however, it is not listed in the "Add or Remove Programs" list accessed through the Windows Control Panel. There is "National Instruments Software - Size 1.04MB" in the list. Is this MAX?
What is the best way to remove MAX?

Hi there Andy,
If you click 'Change' on the entry 'National Instruments Software" within Add/Remove Programs, you will be presented with a utility listing NI software that can be removed/repaired etc. You should find MAX in this list.
Devices not populating in MAX would indicate an issue with the drivers residing 'under' MAX. If the devices are not recognised by Windows, and are not linked to the relavent NI driver, then they will not populate in MAX. I would suggest that prior to unistalling/reinstalling MAX we should try to diagnose what has happened so this situation can be avoided in future. Which NI devices are you using? Could you describe the process you went through to install MAX?
Also, could you check the 'My System>Software' list in MAX and let me know the which NI drivers are listed, and their respective versions? This will help me work out what may have happened.
Cheers,
Rob

To upgrade the version, I installed the NI software from the CD supplied with the USB-6008 "MFG, NI_DAQMX Software for Windows 2000/XP, Ver 8.0.1", without uninstalling anything first.
Once MAX has loaded, there is nothing under the "My System > Software" list, or any of the other lists.
"NI Measurement and Automation Explorer 4.0" is present under "National Instruments Software" when I click on the "Change" button in the "Add or Remove Programs" facility.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for getting back to me. No software present under MAX would imply one of two things- 1) the drivers/software are no longer installed on the system, or 2) MAX is not able to recognise them. Also, NI development environments like LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI should be populated if present on the machine. Are they installed, if so which version(s)?
To ensure the drivers and software are present, please check what other entries are available in the "National Instruments Software" list in Add/Remove Programs. If the drivers are present you should find an entry similar to "NI-DAQmx 8.0", and/or "Traditional NI-DAQ 7.4.2 (legacy)". If they are not present you will have to run the driver CD again and carry out a custom install, and select the relavent drivers to be installed.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Andy,
With the software listed correctly in the NI Software utility this would indicate MAX having some troubles with the Windows configuration. There is another forum thread that has a number of steps that should help resurrect MAX (link below). Please give these a try.

One of the steps includes deleting the contents of the MAX data directory. I would suggest you make a backup copy of these files on your desktop prior to deletion.
I hope this helps,
Rob

I have tried removing MAX and reinstalling it. However, I get the following error after the installation:
"Part of Tagger has encountered a problem...."
If I open MAX and then plug in my USB-6008 I get the message:
"NI-DAQ Device Monitor has encountered a problem...." - this pops up as soon as the device is installed. The device appears under windows, but does not appear under MAX.
I could not reset the NI-DAQmx configuration, since the "Tools>>NI-DAQmx Configuration>>Reset NI-DAQmx Configuration" does not appear in my MAX installation. I also tried the other methods suggested in the article referenced in the last post but with no success.

Hi Andy,
Rob is out of the office this week so I've taken on this service request. Apologies for the delay in posting back to you.
After reading through this thread I am inclined to think that there was a corruption in your MAX installation. Have you tried installing the latest version of NI-DAQmx? You can find it at this link (NI-DAQmx 8.3). Try downloading and installing this driver version, it may correct the MAX issue.
If not you may need to uninstall and reinstall all the National Instruments software. Try the new driver first. If that doesn't work, let me know and I will send you the instructions for removing NI Software. If you have any more information on this please post it and I'll continue to research the issue.
Kind regards,
