How to get DAQ card-516 working in LV8.5

My computer is windows XP. I am using LV8.5 student edition andDAQ card-516.
I downloaded the NI-DAQ 6.9.3 driver, MAX showed both the software and the card.
My questions are:
I cannot find 'data acqisition' in functions palette;
I cannot use instrument I/O assistant either (saying it is not installed correctly, although I reinstalled LV8.5 again);
How to configure the 516-card in labview (to control relay)?
Thanks!

Hi Ning123,

do you have an additional DAQmx driver on your PC?
See this link for more informations: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/F185E098C7EC5A3486256D2E00691BB2

Hope it helps.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thank you so much! I checked the link and found  that  the 'labview 6.1 support' showed with 'X' in my NI-DAQ 6.9.3 feture tree window. I guess it is because I didn't install the LV61Eng.exe. Could you give me the link to download LV61Eng.exe? I cannot find it anywhere in the NI website. Thanks again.

Ning

Hi Mike,

Probably not this Runtime Engine. I tried, but it's not working. I clicked the link you attached in the first reply, where mentioned LV61Eng.exe. But I cannot find it. In my NIDAQ installation window, I don't have labview 6.1 support (it's a cross 'X') either.

Following text and picture are from the link (in your first reply) http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/F185E098C7EC5A3486256D2E00691BB2

  Solution:
Do not install NI-DAQmx or Traditional NI-DAQ over existing NI-DAQ software if you are upgrading existing applications that contain a device not supported in NI-DAQ 7.x and later. You must use NI-DAQ version 6.9.x or earlier to program these devices. The NI-DAQ 7.x Read-Me file contains a list of products which are not supported and will not be supported in future versions of NI-DAQ.

I have not yet installed NI-DAQmx or Traditional NI-DAQ 7.x or later. How do I install NI-DAQ 6.9.3 to support my legacy device?

  1. Launch the NI-DAQ setup program. Run the installer on the NI-DAQ 6.9.3 CD, or download the NI-DAQ 6.9.3 installer from our website (see below: Related Links). Make sure you read the installation instructions explaining which files are necessary and where to install them. The file explains the need to download the LabVIEW 6.1 English Installation Component (LV61Eng.exe for English language installations). Make sure you download both the Nidaq6.9.3.exe and LV61Eng.exe into the same folder.

  2. Double click on the NIdaq693.exe and LV61Eng.exe to extract the files. Run the Setup.exe file (computer icon) to start the installation.
  3. From the NI-DAQ 6.9.3 Feature Tree window, select LabVIEW 6.1 Support. Left click on LabVIEW 6.1 and select Install this feature and sub_features to the local hardware.
  4. With LabVIEW 6.1 highlighted, change the Target Directory at the bottom of the screen to point to your LabVIEW 7.x or 8.x directory. To install DAQ support for LabVIEW 7.1, for example, browse and point the Target Directory to C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\ . This will set the LabVIEW 6.1 Support in the LabVIEW 7.1 directory.

If you have the DAQ Assistant on a palette, that means that you installed DAQmx. According to that link, you cannot have 6.9.3 and DAQmx installed. Did you uninstall DAQmx?

I don't have DAQ assistant on a palette, instead, I have the instrument assistant, which is not working.

I thought perhaps you had just confused the two different assistants. The instrument I/O Assistant is not supposed to work with DAQ boards.

I tried to find the 61Eng.exe file as well and also came up blank. Sorry.

Hi Ning,

Could you be more specific about what you mean by “I don't have labview 6.1 support (it's a cross 'X') either”? Are you saying that you cannot click on the feature tree to include these components during your driver installation?

If you are getting an ‘X’ in the Feature Description during your driver installation (see attached pic), I believe that you may still have a newer version of NI-DAQ Traditional, NI-DAQmx or MAX still installed. Make sure to uninstall these components and any of its dependencies before installing the NI-DAQ 6.9.3 drivers.

Since the NI-DAQ 6.9.3 installation does not include the LabView 6.1 Run-Time Engine, you won’t be able to see it in your feature list during the installation. Make sure to install the LabView Run-Time Engine 6.1(“LVRunTimeEng.exe” from http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/746/lang/de ) and include “LabView 6.1 Support” during your NI-DAQ 6.9.3 driver installation.

One important thing to note is that NI-DAQ 6.9.3 is a legacy driver, therefore, the palette for this driver should be under your Measurement I/O -> Traditional DAQ.

Also, could you be more specific about the error message you are receiving when trying to use the instrument I/O assistant? Please feel free to respond to this post and attach pictures.

I hope this helps,
S_Hong

Hi S_Hong,

Thank you very much! I followed your instruction and got DAQ palette showed in Lv8.5.

However, I cannot uninstall MAX 4.3 using 'add or remove programs', because dependent products including LV8.5 are required to remove together. Instead, I manually moved Max4.3 folder out of 'national instruments'  folder. It's OK to successfully install NI-DAQ 6.9.3, but I don't have MAX now. I was trying to install the MAX 2.2 (coming with the NI-DAQ 6.9.3 driver), but there is an error window saying a higher version of MAX has to be uninstalled before installing MAX 2.2.

Could you please tell me how to configure my DAQCard-516 into LV8.5 in such case? Thanks again!
