stepper motor setup

Hi

I have a PCI-7332 motion controller, SHC68-C68-S, 68 pin VHDCI to 68 pin VHDCI,UMI-7764, D-Sub to Leads Cable for P70530 & P70360 Stepper
Drives,P70360 Stepper Drive,N31HRLG-LNK-NS-00 Stepper Motor.

i have connected all these together, given a +5VDC supply to UMI and AC supply to the driver.

Connections that i made: PCI(motion I/O) - UMI(axis1) -  P70360(J4) - Nema34.

i tried to do the procedure to test the stepper motor given in the following link but i motor does not move.

http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9675C83F037811F68625727C0002A4A5

i need to program a striaght line move, of 30 degrees.

i am not using an encoder, so is there any different setting that i need to do.

setting on  P70360 (S1-4, S2[1-11]-off, S2[12]-on).

Please help me with this.

Thanks

Hi Akshay,

Here are some things to check when trying to get a motion system up and running:

-check, and double check your connections.

-ensure that your MAX settings are correct: Stepper motor, no encoder, disable limit switches, PID settings are reasonable, etc.

-are you getting a following error? or any other sort of error?

-how much power are you supplying to the Drive?  can you test this with a DMM?

-how many steps/motor revolution do you have for this motor?  I believe that it is 200, in that case, S-2 through S-4 would be on, but double check this for your motor model.

Setting up a new motor system is always tricky; try to get the motor moving first before trying to program anything.

I'd double check those dip switches.

Hi Marti

I checked all the connections, they are fine there is 5 VDC to the UMI and 120VAC to the driver, all settings are disabled - encoder, limit switches. But i did not find PID setting.

I am not getting any kind of error, when i check the motion in the step up it shows move complete, i even get a plot in the misc. plots tab.

How do i simulate and check by DMM in these setup steps.

and u were right about the 200 steps/rev of the motor.

Hi Akshay,

Under Axis Configuration>Stepper settings (along the bottom), what do you have for stepper steps per revolution?  Try setting it to 800 (4x200).  Also, the PID settings are under Control Loop Settings in MAX.  What are these set to?

And, were you able to check those dip switches?

Hi

The settings on the Axis config, Stepper settings, Motion I/O Settings are as seen in the attachments.

I am still not able to find the PID settings.

and the dip switches on the driver (S1-4; S2-2,3,4 are ON, others OFF).

Does the Status indicator light on the driver always blink green.

Thanks

Hi,

In the stepper settings, change the 200 to 800 actually.  After reinitializing, try the move again and let me know the results of this test.

Hi

I changes the steps to 800 but still it doesnt works. what would be the settings of the dip switches when steps is 800, i tried a few but still doent works.

my question: i have D-Sub to Leads Cable for P70360 Stepper Drives & P70360 Stepper Drive.

just check my connections: Red - DIR(CCW)1; Blue - Step(CW)1; Orange - INHOUT1; Black - GND; Violet - INHIN1   (all on axis one).

There is a PE lead on the  D-Sub to Leads Cable P70360 where should i connect it.

Is there any setting for the S1 and S2 switches on the UMI.

Thanks

Hi Akshay,

I'm a bit confused about what you're wiring up to the motor--check out this getting started guide:

http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/372324c.pdf

And, are you using the P70530 or P70360?
