getting started with GigE cameras

Hello,

My boss recently purchased a Prosilica 1380H GigE camera for underwater imagery. The specs say that software interface standard is GigE Vision Standard 1.0 for this particular camera. The accompanying software was pretty limited and I am looking into using Labview to trigger the camera and acquire the imagery. Image processing will most likely be done with another program. Would the NI PCIe-8231 (http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/203245) interface be the best choice for me? I am wondering how easy the Vision Acquisition Software is to use and if it is compatible with my particular camera model? Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

Hi, Nick,

Based on my experience with different Basler GigE cameras I can say following:
- you can use any INTEL Gigabit ethernet adapter for acquisition. But you will need to purchase license for Acquisition Software. As far as I can see, this software already included with NI PCIe-8231 card
- if your camera meet GigE Vision standard, then it should work with Vision Acquisition Software.

best regards,
Andrey.

Nick,

I've used this camera before with NI Vision Acquisition SW and it worked well.  I'm curious to know what you are planning for the image processing half of your application.  You might find the image processing and machine vision tools from NI (included in the Vision Development Module) fit the bill and are easier to use.

Nick,

Thank you for your response Andrey. And, yes, the PCIe-8231 does come with Vision Acquisition SW but you will need to purchase it if you do not buy the hardware. It is available for evaluation, as is the Vision Development Module. I suggest giving both of these a try to see how you like them.
