You want to create an AVI file whose image type is 8 bits :
The current implementation of AVI Write saves 8-bit gray-scale images as 32-bit color images. Each of the red, green, and blue planes are given the same value, creating an image that is gray-scale. This causes the file size to be much larger than expected, and the image being read back from an AVI file to be in the RGB format.
So, you can create it but it will be saved much larger than you expect.
