Shape Recognition in RGB [Squares]

Hi,
i am trying to locate and crop a ROI out of an image.
The image in question is standard RGB.

what i'm asking is is there a way of using anything other than the 8bit grayscale shape recognition in Vissual Assistant?

What i am currently working on doing is cropping my ROI square, out of an image by pulling each of the RGB planes out and converting them to grayscales, carrying out the shape recog on each and then using the corridinates that the object was found, averaging them, and cropping the said image.

Any easier way??

I was wondering if you could post any of your code that you've been working on - as I'd like to get a better understanding of how your are implementing the ROI processing and RGB to greyscale conversion.
