ashwink27,

Unfortunately, NI Vision does not currently support the UPC-E barcode format.  However, you still have two options to read this in LabVIEW:

The first is to try to find a third-party application that reads UPC-E barcodes.  If you can find one that exports its functionality as a .dll, you can use the Call Library Function Node in LabVIEW to read the image and pass a string back into LabVIEW.  The exact procedure here will be dependent on how the .dll is set up.

If you is willing to do more image processing on your own, you have the option to write the algorithm yourself, either in LabVIEW or using the Vision Assistant.  UPC-E is a subset of UPC-A.  It removes zeros to reduce the size from 10 digits to 6.  IF you want to pursue this route, you can find more information about reading UPC here, and information specific to UPC-E here.

I am creating a product suggestion to include UPC-E as one of the available options in future releases of Vision.  I highly encourage you to do the same.

Let me know if there is anything else that I can do to help.

Does it mean that multiple suggestions on the same issue raise the chance that the feature gets considered, Brandon?
Your colleague Eric already "invited" the forum in this thread to do so.

Hi Guenter,

I don't want to say that more suggestions will increase the chances that a feature will be selected for future releases, but if there are more product suggestions, then this does indicate to R&D that there are more folks who are interested in a particular feature, which could potentially mean higher odds of implementation.

Hello Ashwin,

I can't officially advise any third-party apps for reading barcodes, but a Google search will yield plenty of results.  I haven't tried it, but an application such as this one, which has options for both .dlls and Active X controls, could potentially work for you.  It looked like my web search brought up a wide variety of results, some of which were freeware, some had a price listed, and others looked more like viruses.

If you do find one that works for you, I recommend posting a link here so that anyone else who encounters this problem can try it as well.

Ashwin,

You will have to refer to the documentation for that software to find out how to reference the .dll.  In general, if you want to use a third-party .dll, you can either use the DLL Import Wizard (in LabVIEW 8.2 and newer), located in Tools » Import » Shared Library, or you can directly use the Call Library Function Node to call the dll.  In either case, you must know what parameters to pass to the dll.

You can use a tool like dependency walker to look into the .dll and pull out the information to create your own .h file.  This document may also help you to get started.
