Very Simple and Dumb Question

I want to add a Readme.md file to my project. It's easy to add it to the project. But when I double click on it in the project explorer, how do I get it to actually open in a text editor? I double click and nothing appears to happen. I don't seem to remember this being a problem on Windows?
